X3M/X4M: The S58 SUV Performance Guide

Platform: F97 X3 M | F98 X4 M (Competition)

Same Engine, Different Wrapper

The F97 X3 M and F98 X4 M use the exact same S58 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six found in the G80 M3 and G82 M4. Same block. Same turbos. Same internals. Factory output is 473 bhp in standard form and 503 bhp in Competition trim. On the dyno, the X3M/X4M puts down the same 420-450 whp as its sedan and coupe siblings.

This is not a "based on" or "derived from" situation. It is the identical engine. That means the same tunes, the same intakes, and the same turbo upgrades apply. The aftermarket parts catalog for the G8X S58 works here, with one notable exception we will cover below.

What Is Different

While the engine is shared, the packaging is not. Here is what separates the X3M/X4M from the G8X:

  • Weight: The X3M weighs roughly 4,200-4,400 lbs — approximately 300-400 lbs more than a G82 M4. That is a meaningful difference in acceleration and braking.
  • Drivetrain: AWD only. There is no RWD option or RWD mode like the G80/G82 offer. Every launch uses all four wheels.
  • Exhaust routing: The SUV chassis routes the exhaust differently due to the higher ride height and different underbody layout. Some downpipes are specific to the X3M/X4M and are not interchangeable with G8X parts. Always confirm fitment when ordering downpipes.
  • Center of gravity: Higher than the sedan/coupe, which affects handling dynamics but has no impact on straight-line dyno numbers.

Power Stages: Identical to G8X

Because the engine is the same, the dyno numbers are the same. Here is what to expect at each stage:

Stage Mods 93 Octane (whp) E30 (whp) E50/E70+ (whp)
Stock 420-450
Stage 1 (Tune Only) ECU tune 500-530 550-580 600-630
Stage 2 (FBO) Intake + downpipes + tune 550-580 620-660 700-740
FBO + Flex + Catback Full bolt-on + flex fuel + catback 580-600 650-700 710-750
Hybrid Turbos Pure Stage 2+ / Spool + FBO 700-750 780-850 850-900
Big Single Turbo RK/EI/KLM + built motor 900-1000 1000-1100 1100-1200+

These are wheel horsepower numbers on the same dynos we use for the G8X. The S58 does not care what body it sits in — it makes the same power.

Real-World Performance: Weight vs. AWD

On paper, 300-400 extra pounds should make the X3M noticeably slower than an M3 at the same power level. And in a straight drag race from a roll, it is — by a small margin. But the story changes at the launch.

The X3M/X4M is AWD-only, and it hooks. From a dig, the permanent all-wheel-drive system puts power down with zero drama. No tire spin, no wheel hop, no lost time waiting for traction. An M3 in RWD mode at the same power level will struggle to put power down off the line unless the driver is very skilled or running drag radials.

The result is that the X3M's weight penalty is partially offset by its traction advantage in real-world launches. On the street, a 600 whp X3M and a 600 whp M4 in RWD mode are surprisingly close in a 0-60 or a roll race. On a prepped drag strip with the M4 in AWD mode, the lighter car pulls ahead.

What X3M/X4M Customers Should Know

  • Same dyno numbers, slightly slower acceleration. Expect 0.2-0.4 seconds slower in a quarter mile compared to a G82 M4 at the same power level. The gap narrows as power increases because traction becomes more important.
  • Intakes are the same. G8X intake systems fit the X3M/X4M without modification.
  • Tunes are the same. The S58 ECU calibration is tuned the same way regardless of chassis. Your tuner does not need a separate X3M-specific file.
  • Downpipes may differ. This is the one area where fitment varies. The exhaust routing under the SUV chassis is different. Always verify that the downpipes you are purchasing are confirmed for F97/F98 fitment.
  • Flex fuel is still the best bang for the buck. Just like on the G8X, adding a flex fuel sensor and running E30+ is the single most effective upgrade you can do per dollar spent.
  • Stock turbo ceiling is still ~750 whp. Same turbos, same limits. Beyond that, you are looking at hybrid turbos or a single-turbo conversion.

The SUV Advantage

There is something uniquely satisfying about an X3M making 700+ whp. It looks like a family hauler. It has a cargo area that fits groceries, golf bags, and car seats. Nobody at the stoplight expects it to move like it does. That sleeper factor is a big part of why X3M and X4M customers mod these cars — and the S58 makes it easy to get there.
